Love can find you anywhere. They say that you’ll find the love of your life when you least expect it.
For Mayra and Kris that was 8,000 miles from home.
In a war zone.
In Baghdad.
It’s not exactly the first place you think of when you imagine finding the love of your life. Images of buildings destroyed by IEDs, hot dusty landscapes and soldiers on patrol are more common place. But it’s where their story begins. Mayra was assigned to document the Texas National Guard’s 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s deployment and Kris is a member of the Guard.
While they may not have known that love waited for them at war, it’s the love and peace they’ve found in each other that will carry them through the remainder of their days. I’m so lucky I was asked to tell their story. Here are a few of my favorite images from their big day.
